A real-world safety compliance deployment by FSI
Fire Safety Industries' hydrostatic testing division completed clean agent Halotron fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing, physical pressure checks, valve rebuilding, and NFPA 10 tagging at our dedicated Albuquerque, New Mexico service shop.
A high-technology research laboratory in Albuquerque contacted FSI regarding five 11 lb Halotron I clean agent extinguishers that were due for their mandatory hydrostatic testing. These specialized extinguishers protect cleanroom computer systems and medical diagnostics equipment, where standard dry chemical powder would cause catastrophic equipment damage. Portable cylinders operating under constant pressure must undergo hydrostatic testing to ensure the metal shell has not suffered stress corrosion, pitting, or structural degradation over time.
NFPA 10 Section 8.3 requires hydrostatic testing of portable extinguishers at set intervals to confirm cylinder safety. Clean agent (Halotron) cylinders housed in aluminum or steel shells must be hydrostatically tested every 12 years, while carbon dioxide (CO2) cylinders require testing every 5 years. This test must be conducted by certified fire protection technicians using specialized testing rigs that apply high water pressure inside the cylinder shell.
The five Halotron cylinders were brought to our Albuquerque testing shop. FSI technicians began by evacuating the clean agent gas into our closed recovery system. The cylinder valves and internal siphon tubes were removed for physical inspection. We filled each cylinder shell with water and placed them inside our steel test jacket. We applied test pressure (up to 300 psi) and measured the physical cylinder expansion using our calibrated digital gauges. All five units passed the pressure verification with zero leakage or structural distortion. We emptied the water, dried the cylinder interiors, reassembled the valve assemblies with new O-rings, and recharged them with the recovered Halotron I agent pressurized with nitrogen. We stamped the new test dates onto the metal collars, applied new annual tag certifications, and returned them to the lab facility.
We provided the lab manager with a maintenance plan, reminding them to check the pressure gauges monthly. We registered these specialized units into our digital tracking database, which will alert them in 12 years when their next hydrostatic pressure test is due, and track their standard annual tag updates in the meantime.
