Project Overview & Egress Protection

Fire Safety Industries' installation crew completed a commercial fire extinguisher installation and recessed wall cabinet mounting project for a brand-new medical clinic in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The facility required safety placement layout design and physical installations to clear its final occupancy permit audit.

The Safety Compliance Challenge

The new medical clinic was completing its final construction phase. To receive a certificate of occupancy, the clinic had to meet strict fire codes, including ADA-compliant extinguisher placement, visible location signage, and certified extinguishers. The building manager contacted FSI to design the placement layout, supply the equipment, and perform the physical installations before the final fire marshal walkthrough.

Code Compliance and Standard Citations

Commercial medical buildings are subject to both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and NFPA 10 standards. ADA Section 307.2 states that wall-mounted objects located between 27 inches and 80 inches above the floor must not project more than 4 inches into hallways or corridors to protect visually impaired individuals. Standard portable extinguishers mounted on surface brackets exceed this limit, requiring recessed or semi-recessed cabinet enclosures in all corridor areas.

FSI's Technical Implementation

FSI technicians surveyed the clinic blueprints and mapped the required positions based on a 75-foot travel distance limit. We supplied and installed 8 JL Industries semi-recessed fire extinguisher cabinets, cutting into the drywall studs and mounting the metal enclosures flush with the corridor walls. We placed new, UL-rated 10 lb ABC dry chemical extinguishers in each cabinet. For the clinic's diagnostic and laboratory rooms containing sensitive testing gear, we mounted specialized 5 lb Clean Agent (Halotron) extinguishers on heavy-duty surface brackets. We applied certified inspection tags to all 12 new units and installed vertical visibility signage above each cabinet.

Ongoing Maintenance and Compliance Recommendations

We provided the clinic with a maintenance program including monthly safety logs to verify pressure levels and cabinet glass safety. We set up an annual inspection reminder in our tracking system to ensure their physical tagging remains compliant under Rio Rancho municipal fire regulations year after year.
