Fire Safety Industries' backflow prevention division was dispatched to a commercial agricultural and processing facility in Corrales, New Mexico, to conduct mandatory annual backflow preventer testing, pressure checks, and municipal compliance certification.
The agricultural facility utilizes specialized irrigation lines and chemical processing systems. These industrial plumbing setups represent high-hazard cross-connections. To prevent fertilizers, chemicals, or non-potable water from siphoning back into the Corrales public drinking water system, the municipal water authority requires annual certified testing of all backflow prevention devices. The client received a compliance warning notice requiring completed inspection logs submitted within 14 days or face water service interruption.
Backflow protection is regulated under the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) water utility rules, and local building codes. In agricultural or industrial zones with potential chemical exposure, a Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) assembly is required. These devices must undergo mechanical testing annually by a licensed backflow assembly tester using calibrated differential pressure gauges.
Our certified backflow technician inspected the 2-inch FEBCO RPZ assembly located at the main water service entrance. Using a calibrated mid-west differential pressure gauge, the technician performed the standard 3-valve test procedure: verifying that the first check valve holds pressure, the relief valve opens at the required threshold (minimum 2.0 psid), and the second check valve holds against backpressure. The system passed all testing parameters. We compiled the formal backflow inspection report, applied a physical certification tag to the assembly, and submitted the digital logs directly to the municipal water authority to clear the client's compliance record.
FSI provided the client with a winterization and maintenance roadmap. Because Corrales experiences sub-freezing temperatures in winter, outdoor backflow devices must be housed in insulated enclosures with heat tape to prevent cylinder cracking. We recommended monthly visual checks to ensure the relief port is not leaking water excessively and added the device to our automated testing schedule for next year.
