OSHA and NFPA 10 outline strict rules for placing, mounting, and certifying portable fire extinguishers in commercial buildings.

Key Extinguisher Placement Guidelines

  • Travel Distance: Class A extinguishers (ordinary combustibles) must have a maximum travel distance of 75 feet. Class K extinguishers (kitchen grease) must be within 30 feet of cooking equipment.
  • Mounting Height: Extinguishers weighing under 40 lbs must be mounted with the top of the handle no higher than 5 feet above the floor. They must have at least 4 inches of clearance from the bottom of the extinguisher to the floor.
  • Visibility: Extinguishers must be clearly visible with signage showing their location, and must not be obstructed.

No. Extinguishers must be securely mounted on wall hangers, placed inside recessed cabinets, or placed on approved extinguisher stands to prevent tipping.
